Medicines authenticity control system
To the pharmacy
The responsibility of pharmacies and hospital pharmacies is to verify the authenticity of medications before dispensing them to the end user.
For the patient
The authenticity of medications purchased through legal distribution channels is verified by the pharmacy dispensing the medication. Patients cannot verify the authenticity of the packaging themselves.
Wholesalers are responsible for verifying the authenticity of the medicines they supply, unless the wholesaler has the status of a "designated wholesaler"
To the manufacturer
It is the responsibility of manufacturers/MAH to ensure that data on serialized medicine packages is uploaded to the medicine authenticity database. The system is also funded by pharmaceutical manufacturers.

REKS was established to manage and coordinate the Estonian Medicinal Product Authenticity Verification System in order to ensure the technical capability to verify the authenticity of medicinal product packages and, thereby, the movement of authentic medicinal products through the legal supply chain.
As of February 9, 2019, there is a requirement in Europe to verify the authenticity of serialized medicine packages (mostly prescription medicines) if the package has a unique security code.
The unique security code is placed on the package by pharmaceutical manufacturers, who are also responsible for uploading the relevant data to the database.
The Estonian Medicinal Product Verification System (EtMVS) enables Estonian pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, and wholesalers to verify the authenticity of medicinal products and deactivate the security code on the package before dispensing the product to the end user.

Data transmission
REK-IS
procedural system
An alert may indicate a possible case of falsified medicine. If, at the time of dispensing the medicine, it is not possible to determine the cause of the alert or verify the authenticity of the medicine, the alert must be forwarded to REKS for processing, and the package associated with the alert must be placed in quarantine until further notice.
All retail pharmacy information systems are integrated with the REK-IS processing system, and the warning notice is forwarded automatically. If the system is not integrated, the warning notice can also be forwarded manually by clicking the link below.
